Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Optical Coherence Tomography or OCT is a sophisticated scanning system that produces highly detailed images of the retina and cornea. It is often likened to an MRI or x-ray of the eye. This scan allows us to see detailed cross-sectional images of the retina, enabling us to accurately detect, monitor and control changes to the retina, particularly with macular degeneration and glaucoma. This procedure is currently the only one that shows in-depth images of the eyes internal structures.

Retinal Imaging

In our continued and dedicated efforts to bring the most advanced and latest technology available to our patients, Bellaire Family Eye Care is proud to have the availability of Digital Retinal Imaging as an integral part of your eye exam.

Benefits:

Many eye problems can develop without warning and progress with no symptoms. Early on, you might not notice any change in your vision. However, diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, as well as other health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can be detected with a thorough exam of the retina using the latest technology.

Retinal photos provide the opportunity for you to view and discuss the images of your eye with your doctor at the time of your exam. These images then become a permanent record for your medical file.

Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer

Visual field testing is most frequently used to detect any signs of glaucoma damage to the optic nerve. In addition, visual field tests using the latest technology are useful for detection of:

  • Central or peripheral retinal disease
  • Eyelid conditions such as ptosis or drooping, particularly for insurance approval of lid lift surgical procedures, optic nerve disease, and diseases affecting the visual pathways within the brain such as tumors, brain swelling, injury or poor circulation, or stroke
  • Macular diseases such as macular degeneration or toxicity from certain medications such as Plaquenil used for rheumatoid arthritis
  • Peripheral retinal disease such as retinal detachment or retinitis pigmentosa

Neurosensory Diagnostic Equipment

Our Sensory View platform and the Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) electro-diagnostic equipment provide valuable insights into visual health, sensory integration, and neurological disorders. Electro-diagnostics allow us to measure and observe the flow of information from the eyes and other senses to the brain. This array of testing helps our doctors more accurately diagnose visual tracking disorders, dizziness, vertigo, headaches, and atypical sensitivities to light and sounds. Treatment protocols help address and treat the underlying causes of the symptoms and support overall improvements in health and well-being.

Macular Density Pigment Testing (MPOD)

Our macular pigment density testing allows us to test for one of the important risk factors in age-related macular degeneration. When the macular pigment is thin, there is a high risk of damage to the metabolic characteristics of the retina. There is less risk of degeneration if the density is thick. With the MPOD, we are able to measure your pigment density and advise you regarding your risks and how to best prevent degeneration. There are many viable treatments including taking carotenoids to increase the thickness of macular density. The MPOD instrument allows us to track the thickness over time.

Macular degeneration occurs in about 1/3 of people over the age of 65, so prevention is key.

Houston Dry Eye Testing LipiScanLipiScan –Precise Diagnosis of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Meibomian gland dysfunction, the blockage or poor function of glands responsible for maintaining a healthy tear layer, is responsible for 86% of dry eye disease. LipiScan upgrades the diagnosis of dry eye disease with high definition imaging. This revolutionary technology has changed the way medicine diagnoses dry eye syndrome in a quick, painless procedure that enables your optometrist to view the health of your meibomian glands with optimum accuracy. Once the cause of your dry eye disease is determined, your optometrist can prescribe the most effective treatment to alleviate your symptoms.
